S.I. MAORI WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT
Christchurch Teams’ Success (New Zealaad Press Association) DUNEDIN, September 1. Christchurch Maoris dominated play throughout the South Island Maori women’s basketball tourney at Portobello yesterday, and two teams from the city fought a keen tussle for championship honours. After winning every round in its section, the Maori Community Centre team beat Maori Youth Club, 11-9. The standard of play by both these teams was clearly above that of the other seven teams in the senior grades and the two junior sides.
Conditions were excellent, with only a light breeze in the afternoon, but many players found themselves at a disadvantage on unfamiliar grass courts. As a result, handling and passing was not of a high standard, although goal shooting was accurate. Several members of last season’s South Island side were in the teams which came from North Canterbury, Christchurch, Morven. Temuka, and Dunedin. Results:— Section A.—First round: Maori Community Centre (Christchurch) », Otakou A 8; Wai Hou (Morven) 5, Aotearoa (Dunedin) 1. Second round: Otakou A 4, Aotearoa 2; Maori Community Centre 8, Waihou 4. Third round: Maori Community Centre 4. Aotearoa 0; Waihou 4, Otakou 0. Section winners: Maori Commupity Centre.
