Fettle Surprises In Avondale First Leg

AUCKLAND. September 1. The eight-ye»r-old gelding, Fettle, reused a big surprise when be won the £2090 Coronation Handicap, the principal event and flrst leg of the double, on the first day of the Avondale Jockey Club's spring meeting yesterday.

Fettle revelled in the very easy going, and after being fairly handy from the start, fought on ganiely under a hard ride over the last furlong. In the end he beat Great Scot by half a length, With Palford a length back third, and Nine Days, Peterford, and Court Jester almost in line next. ' . '• ' . Ridden by J. H- Hely, Sambula scored a narrow win over Copernicus and Estimate in i the second leg, the Sheriff Handicap.
