Racing Calcutta Sweep Wins Ashburton Cup

B . (crfCtitta Sweep clearly outstayed the others to ■ S' 10 ■ Ashburton Cup for his Riccarton owner, Mr KM. M. Hibbard, at Ashburton on Saturday. This was s first race since May, and his nineteenth since his success—the Wairarapa Cup in 1955. The six-year-old Royal Chief gelding was ridden N. Eastwood, who was granted a licence last ■Wednesday to resume a career he ended temporarily of injuries last autumn.

Sweep ran the 11 fureggs on a firm track in 2min 18 a very good gallop. He too strong in stamina for Keep Time and Purser, which Wsre separated by a head for secEnd and third. This was Purser’s 'first appearance in open company. Calcutta SweCp is trained at Riccajtfpr—by F. A. Roberts. He willfee campaigned in the North Jshrtrci soon, and his programme WiU probably be designed to lead <up to the Wellington Racing Club's spring meeting. Curtain Raiser shaded the favourite, Persia, for finishing speed to win the Flying Handicap, the second leg of the double, for his Riccarton owner-trainer, Mr W. J. Davidson.

Like Calcutta Sweep, he was having his first start for the season, but he ran out seven furlongs strongly, and sped over the distance in Imin 24 3-ssec. Holders of 456 5s tickets on the Calcutta Sweep-Curtain Raiser combination received £236 15b for £l. Investments on the double were £32,657 ss, and Calcutta Sweep carried £1254 10s. £4798 10s less the favourite. Gay Tommy. ■MfTomnjty finished fifth, and had for Stakes gained high favour Jfliin Grigg Stakes on it* by winning the RaHandicap. Coq d'Or’s fifth race, first start he brilliantly Canterbury Jockey Club's Stakes, but he did not in his other two races in a short-priced fava strong ’ run on in the straight, and won by half a length from v.’hich mastered Surapt end - was one of two sucwin favourites. The other in the Chatmos racing was held in fine, weather before a fair attendance. The on-course totalisator turnover was £33,049 10s, including £3548 on the double. This meeting replaces one day of the Ashburton autumn meeting. The turnover for the first day of the last autumn meeting was £23,149. Chip Cwnnlwy Loyal Chief was hurried into the lead inside the first two furlongs in the Ashburton Cup, but Purser ran past him near the six furlongs. Demand and County Fermanagh closely followed Loyal Chief, then two lengths ahead of Column and Gay Tommy; then Keep Time, Josudi, Innesfell. and Calcutta Sweep.

Keep Time and Calcutta Sweep were two or three places closer to the lead coming to the home turn, where Purser was still making a strong gallop. Loyal Chief felt the strain soon after, and Demand could not accelerate. But Keep Time, Gay Tommy, and Calcutta Sweep were well in the picture going to the furlong.

Keep Time was Purser's first challenger, and was inching his way towards the lead when Calcutta Sweep ranged alongside wider out

Calcutta Sweep responded generously in a tight finish, and won by half a length going away from Keep Time. Purser was a head back and a length ahead of Innesfell.

Innesfell ran the last furlong strongly and was a length and a half ahead of Gay Tommy. Demand was sixth and Josudi, the surprise second favourite, seventh. Next were Column, Smuggles. Royal Warrant Shoal, Scuppered. Solstice, Loyal Chief, King Robin, Fleur. County Fermanagh, and Relinquish. Strong Challenge

Coq d'Or sustained a strong run from the home turn to win the Rakaia Three-year-old Handicap fairly narrowly, but quite decisively from Her Ex. The weakening pacemaker, Surapt was third, close at hand.

Coq d’Or was third last from the stalls, just ahead of Black Star and Hannibal, which had been sent to the outside. Surapt quickly ran clear, and Her Ex was eased into the trailing position just ahead of Sarcelle. Surapt led past the half-mile by a length from Her Ex. Then there was another length to Hannibal and Vivien Leigh, which were just ahead of Sarcelle, Coq d’Or, William Paul, Bow Tie and Black Star.

Surapt galloped to the straight strongly, but Her Ex ran up to him going to the furlong, where Sarcelle, Vivien Leigh, Hannibal, and Coq d’Or were close by. Coq d’Or had the strongest finish, and he had command of the situation over the last 50 yards. He beat Her Ex by half a length, and Surapt was a long neck back third. Then there was a length to Hannibal, and Sarcelle and Vivien Leigh were practically in line with the Washdyke three-year-old. William Paul was next in a gap, clear of Black Star. Bow Tie was last. Second Leg Curtain Raiser and Persia had the finish of the Flying Handicap U| themselves. , gurtaig Raiser challenged the

ahead of Water Boy, Fulgent, Sumner, Motueka, Princess Neptune, Mananui, Ditched, and | Jimmy Flash. None of the others could get within challenging distance of Curtain Raiser and Persia in the last two furlongs, though Ditched ran clear of the others into third place. Ditched was two lengths behind Persia. Princess Neptune shaped like an early winner in getting up for fourth, though she was two more lengths back. Water Boy was fifth, a length ahead of Motueka. Jimmy Flash got up for seventh with a stayer’s run just ahead of Sumner, Demijour, and Mananui. Fulgent was last. Results:—
