Athletics KUTS BEATEN IN 10,000 METRES

Vladimir Kuts the Russian holder of the world 10,000-metre record, was beaten over that distance in the U.S.S.R. championships tonight by Peter Bolotnikov, whose time of 29min 9.7 sec is the fastest in the world this year. Crowds swarmed on to the track to congratulate the 27-year-old Moscow clerk, who ran in London during the Britain-Russia match last weekend, and finished third behind Gordon Pirie and Derek Ibbotson in the 5000 metres. Kuts, whose world record is 28min 30.4 sec, tonight ran the distance in 29mm lOsec. He finished about three yards behind Bolotnikov after leading for most of the race. Third
place went to N. Pudov, who headed a group of six runners tailing about 80 yards behind the two leaders. His time was 29min 19.4 sec.
Plans For Cinder Track (New Zealana Press Association i AUCKLAND, Sept. 1. New Zealand’s first fully developed 440-yards cinder track is to be built at Auckland at Ellerslie, and is expected to be completed in time for the 1958-59 athletic season. The Ellerslie Athletic Club which has been planning for a cinder track for some time, has received permission from the Ellerslie Borough Council to use the Michaels avenue reserve for the track. The club has applied to the Internal Affairs Department for assistance in raising the necessary finance, exnected to be between £BOOO and £lO,OOO.
