BALLOT FOR HOUSE SECTIONS

Nine Of 15 Applicants Successful

There were 19 applicants for sections at a land ballot held at the office of the Lands and Survey Department. There were 15 sections available, but no applicants for six of them. The most popular section was one at Hewlings road, for which there were nine applicants. The ballot was conducted under the new system instituted recently whereby all applicants are given a number. Numbered marbles are then put into a barrel.

When an applicant’s number is drawn he is given his first preference. If this has already gone, he is given his second preference, and so on.

An unusual feature of the ballot was that all applicants, except one, were civilians. A former serviceman who applied was not eligible for rehabilitation. As another applicant was not going to build a house for himself if he was successful, he was not included in the ballot.

The successful applicants were: Mr p. H. Fitzgerald, Peer street, Riccarton; Mr F. J. Foster, Healings street, Shirley; Mr A. H. F. Huisman, Briggs road, Shirley; Mr S. A. Smith, Cranford street, Papanui; Mr C. R. Wyllie, Avonhead road, Riccarton; Mr G. Johnstone, Cashmere road, Cashmere; Mr N. J. Owens, Main South road, Riccarton; Mr W. L. Bailey, Sparks road, Hoon Hay; Mr D. K. Nesbit, Withells road, Harewood.

The sections for which there were no applicants are at Blenheim road, Cavendish road, two on the Rangiora-Woodend road. Whincops road, and Withells road. Th® B ® will be made available to the first applicants.
