MR WILFRED ADAMS

Mr Wilfred Adams, of Charing Cross, who died recently was a noted breeder of Border Leicester sheep, with which he won many show awards. He also had a Southdown flock with which he earned distinction. The son of Mr C. H. Adams and the grandson of the late Mr T. W. Adams, who in 1860 was the first settler in Greendale, Mr Wilfred Adams was bo?n in Greendale in 1903 and educated at the Greendale School and the Darfleld District High School before beginning work on his father’s farm. Mr Adams began his Border Leicester flock on his father’s farm in 1926. when he was 23 years old. with 35 ewes and sever ewe hoggets from Mr John Gardiner. The ewes were in lamb tc a ram bred by Canterbury Agricultural College. His Southdown flock was established with ewes bought from Messrs R, J. Low and E. P. Adams in 1943.

At the Christchurch show. Mr Adams was a well known and successful exhibitor. At the last two Royal shows in Christchurch he won the highest points in the Border Leicester section and at last year’s show he won several places in both the Border Leicester and Southdown sections. Mr Adams was also a show judge. He first judged Border Leicesters at Timaru about 16 years ago. and since then iudged at most shows in Canterbury and also at Invercargill. In his younger days, Mr Adams was a successful athlete. Mr Adams is survived by his wife and three sons—Michael (Charing Cross), James, a student at Canterbury University College, and Owen, a pupil at the Christchurch Boys’ High School—and a daughter, Janice Adams, of Charing Cross. In the district where he farmed a property of 500 acres Mr. Adams was for a period a member of the Charing Cross School Committee, and he was also a vice-president of the Greendal: Cricket Club.
