MERCHANT SHIPS IN WAR

Navies To Combine In Exercise

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 1. From September 9 to 13, the war-time system of- merchant shipping control is to be tested throughout an area embracing New Zealand, Australia and Malaya. All British merchant ships will come under threat of attack from vessels of the Royal and Australian navies acting as enemy raiders, and their movements will be recorded and plotted. Assisting the naval units will be aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm and Royal Australian Air Force. They will make regular reconnaissance sweeps over the shipping routes. Special control rooms—one to be located in Wellington—will receive reports of all movements. Shipping in New Zealand coastal waters and the Pacific is to be tracked in Wellington and plotted on wall maps. Ngval reserve officers are to play an important part in .the exercise, manning the Wellington centre and serving also as naval control of shipping officers in various New Zealand ports.
