Ceremonies In London
(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, August Ji. The red and white striped flsg of Malaya was broken at Malay, House. Trafalgar Square, Londosi, tpday to mark the independence of the Federation. The Colonial Under-Secretary, Mr John Profumo attended the ceremony at whic hthe proclsmv tion of independence was read in Malay and English by the High Commissioner, Mr Dato Nik Kamil, who wore full national dress. The proclamation was heralded by a fanfare played by the trumpeters of the Blues the Royal Horse Guards. After the flag was broken by the High Commissioner, Malaya’s national anthem was played by the Welsh Guards. Malaya was officially welcomed as a member of the Englishspeaking Union at a ceremony outside the union's London headquarters today. Mr Kamil unfurled the Malayan flag alongside nine others outside Dartmouth House.
"Though the Malay language has been declared the national language of the Federation of Malaya, our .existing link with the English-speaking world will continue as we appreciate the great value of the English language, and it wil] be taught in our schools for many years to come,” Mr Kamil said.
