MIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA
“ Lack Of Balance Of Sexes” MELBOURNE, August 30. Lack of balance between the sexes in Australia’s post-war immigration flow had led to serious social and economic problems, according to a Roman Catholic pastor on immigration. The statement titled “Australia’s Bold Adventure,” is signed by the Primate of Australia (Cardinal Gilroy) and all 34 of the bishops, and is published for “Social Justice Sunday,” tomorrow. The directors of immigration were making efforts to correct the situation, the statement Isaid. “Experience has taught the unmarried non-British migrant that he will receive little encouragement to marriage from Australian girls, and his unnatural position in the community has caused a spirit of deep resentment. “Social workers inform us that the predominance of male migrants had led to a. rapid growth in the sordid trade of prostitution.” The statement said there was an urgent need of more family migration, and also of a vigorous effort to bring to Australia an increasing number of single female immigrants from the countries which had supplied the bulk of the newcomers.
