Weapon Veered Off Course (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 31. The United States 1500-mile, intermediate range missile, Thor, launched successfully yesterday from the test centre at Florida, veered off-course and had to be destroyed in flight, authoritative sources said today. The sources, in Washington, said that the launching itself went according to plan. But soon atfer getting into the air, the missile started turning, and seemed to be making a wide sweep which could have brought it back towards the mainland. The “Miami News” has reported that an intercontinental ballistic missile had been fired about 24,000 miles into the .Atlantic from Cape Canaveral missile- test centre probably two months before the announcement that the Russians had developed such a weapon. The newspaper said that the was probably fired in early June. According to the “Miami News” the missile, described as a ~ Convair Atlas, reached a point in the South Atlantic about 2400 from the Florida coast between the British island of St. Lucia and the equator.
