SIERRA LEONE EMERGENCY
FREETOWN (Sierra Leone), August 31.
West African troops took up positions today at key points in the troubled Kono area* of Sierra Leone where disturbances have been reported amon; illicit diamond miners.
A Government spokesman said that troops had taken up positions in the Yengema area where disturbances began last Saturday, and had also relieved the police at certain other posts. The number of troops involved could not be disclosed.
A state of emergency was declared in the area after, 300 Africans had rioted and looted the company’s stores and strongrooms at plant in the Yehgema area last week-end. The spokesman said tonight the state of emergency was still in force.
