BULLER GORGE PASSAGE

Jet Boats Reach Lyell A jet-propelled shallow draft boat service may be established through the Buller Gorge as a tourist attraction, and to give visitors a better -opportunity of seeing the gorge from river level. A group of Westport business men contemplates the establishment of a jet boat service on the river after the passage on Saturday of three jet-propelled speed boats from Christchurch, which made the first power boat navigation of the gorge. They negotiated the rapids and boulders without trouble, and reached Lyell, returning to Westport the same day. They took about two hours and 17 minutes to make the upstream journey, and one hour minutes on the return journey of about 43 miles.

Hundreds of persons lined the Buller Gorge roadway on Satur-. day and stood on beach vantage points to see the boats go through the rapids, and the Reefton-West-port rail-car made a special stop in the gorge to let the passengers see the boats.
