LONG-TERM PLANS IN UNIVERSITY
Three Aspects To Be Studied Separate but co-ordinatec! investigations of future university development in New Zealand in terms of a suggested new university of South Auckland, all colleges’ building needs in the next decade, and potential expansion in the next 20 years to serve growing population were ordered by the Senate of the University of New Zealand on its last meeting day in Christchurch yesterday.
The Vice-Chancellor (Df. O. A. Currie) said that the South Auckland University and' Teachers’ College Society case had created sufficient interest to warrant examination and he proposed a committee comprising the ProChancellor (Mr L. J. Wild), the Vi'-e-Chancellor, the Director ot Education (Mr C. E. Beeby), the chairman of the Academic Board (Mr K. J. Maidment), a member of the University Grants Committee (Sir Arthur Nevill), and a representative of the Auckland University Co” •• e Council. “I am a little perturbed that the composition of that committee would suggest that this matter is local to the Auckland province rather than national,” said Mr D. W. Bain (Canterbury). Any such development would affect the whole university system. Mr W. D. Dyer said Massey College would be immediately affected and should be represented.
Eventually the Senate decided to add representatives of all the colleges to the committee. It was reported that the University Grants Committee had already embarked on its estimates for the next five years and on an inquiry into building needs in the next 10 years. This information would assist in any special investigations. Mr Douglas Robb had given notice to move that the Senate discuss the basis on which university development should be planned in the next 20 years, and it was agreed that members should submit papers to the annual meet- 1 ing next year.
