Table Tennis NEW ZEALAND TRIALS
B. Foster’s Convincing Display (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, August 4. A new hope for New Zealand table tennis emerged from the trials held at Palmerston North yesterday to select the team to meet the touring Japanese world champions. Tanaka and Ogimura, in the two test matches this month. Bryan Foster (Otago) winner of the' 1957 South Island men’s championship at the age of 17, easily defeated New Zealand-ranked G. J. Frew (Northland) and A. Tomlinson (Auckland) in straight sets and beat M. Dunn (Wellington) a former New Zealand representative in two straight sets also. In his game against R. V. Jackson, however, the latter’s experience told and although the points Were well fought, the Australiasian champion’s superior tactics and greater accuracy resulted in a straight sets win for Jackson, who is undoubedly still New Zealand’s leading player. Although the test sides will not be announced until immediately before the first test in Auckland on August 16, Jacks6n and Foster in the singles, and Jackson and Tomlinson in the doubles; seem the strongest claimants for’ inclusion on the basis of Saturday’s trials.
