LORD COBHAM’S CHILDREN

The Governor-General-desig-nate (Lord Cobham) and Lady Cobham at one time intended to leave their eldest son, John, aged 14, and their second son, Christopher, aged 9, at school in England, but subsequently they decided to take all the family to New Zealand.

It is understood that John, who was at Eton, will go to Christ’s College, Christchurch, to continue his education, and that Christopher, who was at preparatory school, will go to St. George’s, Wanganui. Lord and Lady Cobham are believed not yet to have made up their minds where Richard, aged 8 and Nicholas, aged 6, will be educated. Juliet, aged 13, will go to Woodford House, and Catherine, aged 11, to Nga Tawa. The twins, Sarah and Lucy, are only 3. The cost to the Cobhams of going to New Zealand is believed to be considerable. Although no information is available, it is estimated that at present-day prices they are likely to have been committed to spend £.15,000 to £16,000 before setting foot in the Dominion.

This is morfe than the GovernorGeneral’s annual salary, according to Whitaker, of £5OOO plus £6500 expenses. This is a heavy burden for Lord Cobham to bear, particularly as on the death of his father he had to find something in the region of £lBO,OOO for death duties.
