HOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE

Farm Cottage Near Methven

A four-roomed cottage on the property of Mr L. Woods, one and a half miles from Methven, was completely destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The house was occupied by«Mr and Mrs R. Collins and their three children. Had the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade not been hampered by a shortage of water it seemed certain that the 'two front rooms of the house would have been saved.

When Mr Collin* was awakened by the noise the fire was confined to the back of the house. The Methven telephone exchange was closed at the time and a neighbour travelled by car to call the brigade. The alarm was given at 5.55 a.m. When the brigade arrived the back of the house was ablaze but shortly afterwards the fire was brought under control. However, at this stage the water supply ran out and while the brigade was waiting for it to build up the fire regained a hold and was soon out of control. Both the house and its contents were completely destroyed. The house and its furnishings were insured but the occupants’ personal effects were not covered. Neighbours gave clothes to the family yesterday.
