ELDERLY MAN DIES IN FIRE
Rescue Attempts Unsuccessful
(New Zeaiana Press Association) GISBORNE, August 4.
An elderly man living alone at Te Araroa was burned to dea.th when fire destroyed his whare soon after 1 a.m. today. He was Alexander Mathewson, aged 82. Mr and Mrs N. Bartlett, living next door, were roused about 1.10 a.m. by the children to find the whare blazing K strongly, fanned by a south-easterly breeze. Mrs Bartlett tried to force her way into the building, but only succeeded in opening the door. She received burns on her hands and her hair caught alight before she was driven back. Residents formed a bucket brigade but more than two hours elapsed before the entrance could be forced to discover the body. Mr Mathewson had apparently knocked over a lamp, starting the fire.
