EXCURSION TO PASS

Police Question Youths Many of the 1100 persons who went on an excursion to Arthur’s Pass yesterday spent most of their time in the railway carriages. Although there were patches 6f snow on the ground at the station, with promise of more snow further up the pass, it rained steadily throughout the day.

The three excursion trains were delayed for about 30 minutes at Springfield after trouble had been experienced with the engine of the leading train. Police constables and railway officers on the first two trains were satisfied with the behaviour of the passengers. Four windows were broken in the last carriage of the third train. Several youths were, taken to the Central Police Station for questioning after the last train arrived in Christchurch about 8.15 p.m.

Two youths from the last train were trea, d at the outpatients’ department of the Christchurch Public Hospital and then sent home. It is believed that they were suffering from concussion. It is not known how they received their injuries.
