Lord Cobham Boards Liner With Family And Cars

The Governor-General designate of New Zealand, Lord Cobham, went on board the liner Rangitiki at London Docks today, with four cars, 100 pieces of luggage his wife, eight children, and a feeling of relief, the “Daily Mail’’ has reported. At the top of the gangway ne lined up all the young Cobhams, tallest on the right, shortest on the left, and counted them—just to be sure. There was a sudden commotion when Nicholas (six) made for the ship’s rail. Said Lord Cobham philosophically: “If he gets to New Zealand safely I’ll be surprised.*’ The family left Hagley, in Worcestershire, about 150 miles from London, at 8 a.m. A Rolls-Royce, a Wolseley, a Rover, and a Ford were already on board, so they travelled in an Austin A 35 and a Morris Minor, with the luggage in a farm van. “You can imagine what it was like travelling with thia gang.”

Lord Cobham said. “The cars seemed to have elastic sides ’’ Asked whether he had always planned a large family, Lord Cobham said: “Yes. Most of my ancestors had large families—one of them had 14—but I shan’t try to break his record. We have a tennis six and two reserves.** The Rangitiki will sail for New Zealand tomorrow, by way of Panama. The children are John (14), Juliet (13), Catherine (11), Christopher (9), Richard (8), Nicholas (6), and the twins, Sarah and Lucy (3).
