THE SUN RETURNS TO ANTARCTICA

First Glimpse Since May

[From J. HOLMES MILLER, deputy leader of the New Zealand, Antarctic ‘ Expedition.]

SCOTT BASE, August 2. Today, the sun was seen for the first time since early May at the combined New Zealand and American base at Cape Hallet, 350 miles to the north of Scott Base on Ross Island.

This is encouraging news to the men at Scott Base, where each day an ever-increasing amount of light helps to shorten the three and a-half weeks yet remaining before the sun returns. Never has the truth of an old creed been so well illustrated as during the last four days at Scott Base—the days have lengthened and the cold has strengthened. On each of the past four days the temperature has dropped to below 50 degrees below zero, with the lowest of 59.3 deg on Wednesday —more than 91deg of frost.
