CITY MAN MEETS QUEEN MOTHER
Scoutmaster In Britain
David Garland, a Christchurch scoutmaster, was 'greatly taken aback when the Queen Mother spoke to him for several minutes at the Royal Highland Show at Dundee recently. Mr Garland was standing m full scout uniform by the steps of the Royal pavilion as Her Majesty was coming down. Recognising his New Zealand badges, she stopped and spoke to him, mainly about the World Jamboree at Birmingham which Mr Garland will attend in August. Before moving on, the Queen Mother wished Mr Garland a pleasant stay. Mr Garland, who is 23. has been connected - with the Riccarton scout troop for many years, starting as a wolf cubr He worked his way to England on the Rangitoto, and is the assistant advance agent for the New Zealand contingent, of 170, to the jamboree. Mr Garland is expected back in Christchurch in February, 1958.
