PACKING OF MEAT FOR EXPORT
Bill On Licensing Of Premises
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 4.
A Meat Amendment Bill introduced in the House of Representatives today gives local authorities power to license premises used for the packaging of meat for export.
Licensing of these premises is to start at the beginning of next year, but licences must be granted for meat-packing houses in existence at the passing of the bill, so ■long as application is made before November 30. These meatpacking houses must also have satisfactory premises and equipment.
Introducing the measure, the Minister of Agriculture (Mr K. J. Holyoake) said he believed there was a valuable potential in packed meat. But the premises on which this meat was packed must be licensed, conform to certain standards of hygiene, and be subject to inspection.
Asked by the Lgader of the Opposition (Mr Nash) whether the bill had anything to do with an investigation of freezing companies by the Meat Board, Mr Holyoake replied: ‘‘No, nor is this legislation the place for it.”
