NEW DIAGNOSTIC STATION
Lincoln’s Claim Examined Mr R. B. Tennent, acting-Director-General of Agriculture, has written to. the board of governors of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, seeking details of the board’s proposal for a veterinary diagnostic station at the college. Discussing the letter at a board meeting. Dr. M. M. Burns, the director, said that the questions had been answered, and only Mr Tennent’s request for suggestions on finance need be discussed. In his letter, Mr Tennent said that a main difficulty was the failure to find a method of financing the proposal which would be acceptable to the Government and to the statutory primary producers’ boards. He asked what buildings and facilities the college would be prepared to make available for a diagnostic station, and what assistance would be required for the provision of additional buildings and facilities. The chairman (Mr W. H. Gillespie, M.P.) said he did not think the board should discuss suggestiohs on finance at present. In reply to a. question from Mr H. R. Lake, M.P., Dr. Burns said that the capital cost for converting buildings and facilities at the college for use as a diagnostic station would be £7000; and, as far as he could remember, the annual operation cost would be £ll,OOO.
Members of the board agreed with Dr. Burns that all diagnostic stations should be financed in the same way, but it was decided that the reply to Mr Tennent should be that as the Government and the statutory boards were negotiating on the matter, the board preferred not to offer any suggestions “at the moment.”
