SEWING MACHINE APPEAL

C.0.R.5.0. Work In East Pakistan A special appeal is being made to the public of New 'Zealand through C.0.R.5.0. for small portable sewing machines to send to East Pakistan, where they will form the basic equipment for a vocational training centre for young persons. The Dominion secretary (Mr C. W. Morrison) said recently that the centre was plqpned by the East Pakistan Emergency Relief Committee, which distributes much C.0.R.5.0. aid. It would entirely depend on portable sewing machines being given by New Zealanders, whether the centre would be opened. The machines must be in good working order. The machines would be used to restitch odd or over-sized C.0.R.5.0. clothing for Pakistani children. At the same time groups of adult boys and girls would be able to learn sewing as training for a vocation, he said. Woollen yarn for teaching knitting and weaving to girls both at the centre and in schools and orphanages was also needed. The garments made would go to needy persons. Other useful gifts requested for the centre were braiding machines, lace making machines, •and others for teaching crafts. These gifts will serve two purposes—teaching an art and providing clothes for distribution. They cari be sent to the C.0.R.5.0. office iii Christchurch at 72 Hereford street.
