News For Women Papanui High Schoofs Fifth Debutante Ball

The fifth □debutante ball arranged by the Papanui High School Old Stude/its’ Association, coinciding with the schools-cele-bration of its twenty-first' year, was held at the Winter Garden last evening and was attended by more than 300 guests. Sixteen debutantes,’ . wearing white frocks and carrying posies of pastel-shaded flowers, were presented to Mrs L. B. Newton,wife of the patron of the association and headmaster of the school. They were trained for ;the ceremony and presented by Mrs G. H. Reynolds. Posies, presented to the debutantes by Mrs F. Harper, and sprays, presented to official women guests by the secretary (Miss P. The debutantes were Misses Rena Hyde, Janice Prestney, Elaine McQuillan, Julie Taylor, Pamela Hartley, Faye Caldwell, Greta Kerr, Adrienne Cox, Glenis Francis, Marilyn Mumford, Margaret Gordon, Lesley Farrant, Shirley Eden, Valerie Hussey,

Barbara Smith and Daphne Sail. Specially invited guests included Mr and Mrs L. B. Newton; Mr O. C. Mitchell, deputychairman of the school board of governors, and Mrs Mitchell; Mr and Mrs C. E. Carleton; Mr and Mrs F. Harper; members of the school staff; and of Christchurch West High School and Rangiora High School Old Pupils’ Associations. Mrs Newton wore a frock of midnight blue poult made with a full circular skirt and V-neck-line trimmed with silver lame. Mrs Reynolds chose a frock of stiffened French silk striped in violet, grey and black tonings. The shoulder line was finished with a fichu of grey net, caught with pink rosebuds at the back and trailing to the hemline. Miss Millward’s frock was made with a pale pink satin brocade H-line bodice and fully gathered skirt of pink nylon net. Replicas of the new monogram of the Old Students’ Association were prominently displayed in the ballroom, which was decorated with bowls of greenery and potted plants.
