School Committees

Sir,—Could you tell me whether a school teacher who resides in a borough and has children who attend a school in that borough is entitled to vote at an election of a committee of a school in a rural district of which he is not a resident? Is a school teacher entitled to a vote in his or her own district as well as the district in which he or she is employed? If this procedure is incorrect would the poll at which the teacher voted at the rural district be void? —Yours, etc.. INTERESTED. April 17, 1957. [Mr W. P. Spencer, secretarymanager of the Canterbury Education Board, has given the following. information: ‘‘A teacher residing in a borough with children attending school in that borough cannot vote at an election for a school committee in a rural district. The teacher is entitled to vote at an election at the school his children attend or as a resident of a school district. Employment is not a qualification. If an irregularity occurs and a complaint made, the board need not call for another election if in its opinion the informality was not wilful and did not really affect the result of the election. The board’s decision is final and conclusive.”]
