Old Iron
After hanging from the back wall of an engraving shop for 17 years, a shield for water polo was last week retrieved by an official. Like many other shields and cups, the trophy bore no indication of the club or association to which it had been originally given. Many mysteries remain unsolved at this particular engraver’s shop. A box is full of unclaimed cups and trophies. They bear on the engraving nothing to denote the owners. That may explain why some givers of trophies wonder why their names are now never mentioned in the sporting news.
