BRITAIN’S NEW ROCKET AND JET AIRCRAFT.—The SR-53. the new rocket and jet-powered experimental aircraft of the Saunders-Roe Company, in flight over Boscombe Down, Wiltshire. It climbed almost vertically and disappeared behind a high cloud in less than 30 seconds. The single-seater machine is powered by ade Havilland Sprite rocket engine and an Armstrong Siddeley Viper jet engine, and is the first British manned-aircraft with a rocket as its main power. The Royal Air Force will not buy any more manned-fighters, but the West German Air Force is interested in the new SR-53. Ground-to-air guided missiles will eventually take the place of manned-fighters in the Royal Air Force.
