FIREWORKS EXPLODE
Three Injured In Factory
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 22. Two women and a youth were injured when a box of fireworks exploded this afternoon at the Te Atatu factory of Universal Pyrotechnics, Ltd. Mrs Louise May Everett, aged 69, of 22 McLeod road, Henderson, and Miss Patricia Karl, aged 16, of Taikata road, Te Atatu, were admitted to the Auckland Hospital with extensive burns to the face, arms, and legs. Their condition when admitted was serious, but tonight the hospital reported their condition as fairly satisfactory. Alexander Colin Buchanan, aged 14, of Te Atatu road, Te Atatu, was also admitted to the Auckland Hospital with burns to his face and back. His condition tonight was fair. It was stated that the burns were caused by a “flash-back explosion” during one of the final processes of fireworks manufacture. The explosion was not a violent one, and damage was confined to the breaking of two windows. The manager of the factory (Mr H. York) said that the cause of the explosion would not be known until an inquiry was held by an explosives inspector.
