SMASH AND GRAB RAID

Riccarton Jeweller’s Loss Small plaster figures of a bride and groom left lying where they fell on the footpath, and a jagged hole in the unprotected glass window, showed a passer-by early yesterday morning that a Riccarton road jewellers had been raided.

At 6.30 a.m. he awoke Mr R. W. J. Harrington at his home at 15 George street, Riccarton, to tell him of the raid. “It was kind of him to call,’’ said Mr Harrington later, “but I don’t know who he was.’’ The police hope the messenger may be able to help them further with their inquiries.

The plaster figures were from a wedding ring display stand. It was in the form of an arch, and was used as a mount for the rings. These, several men’s dress rings, and a man’s watch were taken. The total value of the stock, which was insured, was about £l5O.

Detectives said yesterday that the window, 10ft by sft, was broken by a heavy instrument. It was the fourth time in the eight years Mr Harrington has been there that the shop has been broken into or raided.
