Goddard Plays For M.C.C.

(N.Z. Press (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, April' 27. The captain of the touring West. Indies cricket team, John Goddard, was bowled after making only five runs when he batted for the M.C.C. against Yorkshire' on the opening day of the English first class cricket season at Lord’s today. Goddard, who is a candidate for M.C.C. membership, played his first match for the M.C.C. today. He hopes to play another before the present West Indies tour is over. He was one of Freddie Trueman’s three victims today. In a spell of 13 overs, which included two maidens, Trueman’s pace claimed three for 30, helping Yorkshire to rout the strong M.C.C. side for only 109 runs. Surrey’s bowlers also made a grand start to the season against Cambridge, at Fenner’s. Peter Loader and Alec Bedser sent back the university's first five batsmen for only 29 runs. After a chilly two days at Eastbourne, the West Indies cricketers played a one-day match against A C. L. Bennett's 12 at Motspur Park, in Surrey. Sonny Ramadhin took five for 16 •and Bennett's side was all out for only 77. The West Indies players agreed to the one-day match in order to get a little more practice before their tour proper opens at Worcester next Wednesday, May 1. M.C.C. PROPOSALS Agreement By West Indies (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, April 27. The West Indies touring cricket team has agreed to two of the main points of the M.C.C. welfare committee's proposals to brighten cricket. The agreement does not cover test matches. These points are for the standardising of boundaries at a maximum of 75 yards, and for giving umpires extra powers to curb time wasting. The West Indies did not agree to the limitation of on-side fieldsmen to five, with not more than two men behind the popping crease. CRICKETERS OF THE YEAR LONDON, April 26. Wisden, the cricketers’ almanack, today named two Australians among the five cricketers of the year. They are J. W. Burke, of New South Wales, and G. R. A. Langley, of South Australia. The other three named are Dennis Brookes, of Northamptonshire, M. J Hilton, of Lancashire, and P. A. Richardson, of Worcestershire. West Indies Draw (N.Z. Press Association^jCopyright) LONDON, April 26. A two-day friendly match between the West Indies and E. W. Swanton’s eleven ended in a draw at Eastbourne today. West Indies made 368 for six declared and 69 for three. Swanton’s eleven made 244 for eight declared.
