IMPRESSIVE FIGURES

Crops valued at £16.300,000 were produced last year on Queensland’s irrigated farms. The report of the State Department of Irrigation and Water Supply shows that of the irrigated area 63,323 acres were under sugar cane, 23,285 acres under fodder, 18,835 acres vegetables, 4533 under tobacco, and 3001 under fruit. The report added that, in spite of the abnormal rainfall this season, there was a growing interest in irrigation. This was indicated by an increase in the number of licences., issued to divert water from streams for irrigation, the number of bores drilled by the commission for farmers, and provision of water supply and irrigation advisory services to some 650 landholders.
