BADMINTON
Changes In Team Selection Selection of the Canterbury representative badminton teams this season will be strictly according to the ladder, it was decided at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Badminton Association. Formerly, the teams had been chosen by the selectors after an extensive series of trials. The chairman (Mr O. J. Bates) discussed the advisability of the association having its own courts in the very near future. A plot of land had been secured at Waimairi, and it was hoped to build two courts. When plans were prepared, a meeting will be called to consider how to raise the £6OOO necessary to finance the undertaking. On behalf of the Ashgrove Club, Mr S. Lawn said that some clubs with several A grade players had difficulty in securing further players of the required standard to enter a full team in the top grade. The suggested remedy was to form a pool of all A grade players in Christchurch, and to form, from these players, teams of equal strength to play in the A grade competition. This motion was heavily defeated. Mr R. Britten (Avonside) suggested that the association make a further attempt to form an umpire's association in the province. Past attemps to form such an association, he said, had failed. The meeting decided that a further attempt should be made, because there were only one or two qualified umpires in the province. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr V. R. Skellerup; president, Mr O. J. Bates; vice-president, Mr R. Britten; secretary-treasurer, Mr D. J. Clark; executive, Miss K. Palmer, Messrs A. Woodill, K. Haworth, A. Roberts, M. Henderson, K. Gerrard, W. C. Pritchard, R. F. Marriott, and S. Clarke.
