HALSWELL COUNTY COUNCIL

Financial Position “Satisfactory” The Halswell County Council ended the year 1956-57 with a balance of receipts over expenditure of £4027. Total reteipts in all accounts for the year were £21,521, and expenditure was £17,494. The previous year ended with a credit balance of £3886. Income from county rates was £8765, and that from permits, licences, and fees was £689. The expenditure on roads and bridges in the county was £6187, partly paid from a subsidy of £2500 from the National Roads Board. Administration costs were £1905, and general works and expenses amounted to £lO3l. The county paid a Hospital Board leyy of £397. Balances in all accounts at the end of the year totalled £7913. Mackenzie) said: “The position is quite a satisfactory one.” Rook Poisoning The council agreed to contribute to the cost cf poisoning rooks at the request of the rook control committee. Cr. J. R. Parrish said that quite a few farmers had protested about the cost and were not going to pay for the bread needed for bait. Cr. E. G. Robertson said that £7 or £8 had been paid in bounty money and there was no need to quibble about the contribution. The Paparua County Council has agreed in the meantime to pay for the cost of bread in the campaign.

Speed Restriction.— The council agreed that a limited speed zone restriction should be imposed on the Christchurch-Akaroa State Highway from the Halswell Hotel corner to Candys road corner, and that the Transport Department be advised of the council’s opinion. According to a letter from the Chief Traffic Officer, Christchurch (Mr E. Wilson), such a restriction would be considered by the No. 14 National Road Board.

Telephone Exchange.— A letter from the chief postmaster, Christchurch (Mr H. R. Pool) asked the council for information on the future location of the shopping centre in the Halswell township as guidance for the purchase of a site for a telephone exchange. The council decided to reply that it was not yet in a position to give this information, and that the zoning plan for the area was not yet available.
