COLOMBO STREET OVERBRIDGE

Effect On Sewers Examined Plans for the Colombo street overbridge and the “flyover” bridge in Moorhouse avenue had been discussed with the consulting engineer for the bridge (Mr E. G. S. Powell) and the City Engineer (Mr E. Somers), the

engineer (Mr E. F. Scott) reported to the Christchurch Drainage Board.

“It seems to be a justifiable risk to leave things as they are,” said Mr Scott after discussing possible damage to the sewer and stormwater sewer in Moorhouse avenue. The cost of deviation would be very high, he said, and in the opinion of the engineers consulted, not justified. Generally, the sewers were in good order, and an inspection had revealed only one minor fault. The chairman (Mr H. P. Smith) said the inspection had been made because the board wanted to be reasonably sure that when the overbridge was begun, possible damage to the board’s sewers would not cause a delay.
