CORAL ROUTE AIR FARES

Increase From May 1 "The Press’* Special Service AUCKLAND, April 17. Fares on the Tasman Airways Coral Route will rise on May 1 to help cover losses incurred in recent years. The single fare from Auckland to Papeete will be 10 guineas higher at £lO7 10s, and from Auckland to Apia the fare will go up from £53 to £55 10s. There will be no increase in the fare on the DC6 flights between Auckland and Nandi. In June, Tonga will no longer be on the Coral Route. At the request of the Tongan Government, which has a business arrangement with Tasman Airways, the service between Suva and Tonga will be discontinued as it is no longer a good economic proposition. In order to meet new increases in costs, scheduled airlines in Europe will make an emergency fare increase of 5 per cent, from May 1, but this will have no immediate effect on fares from New Zealand. According to a spokesman for Tasman Airways, the change could have a long-term effect, but for direct flying from New Zealand to Europe, the effect of the Northern Hemisphere rise would be nil.
