ARK ROYAL UNFIT

Oamaru Start Cancelled

“The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, March 22. Ark Royal will be missing from his engagement in the Elderslie Handicap, the first leg of the double at Oamaru on Monday. This announcement was made by his owner, Mr G. J. Barton, after consulting his trainer, A. I. Powell, today. Mr Barton said that he regretted letting the Oamaru club down after promising the committee that the Marco Polo four-year-old would resume racing at their meeting, but Ark Royal had not recovered from an accident earlier in the week and he could not take any chances with him. Ark Royal jumped .a trestle during a training gallop at Wingatui on Tuesday, and he struck his near front joint. It did not appear to be serious at the time, but he has been favouring this leg since and has not been worked. It. is likely that a few days’ rest will remedy the injury, but the break in his preparation has come at a bad time.

The race at Oamaru was. to have been part of his training schedule for Easter racing, with hjs mission the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton, an event he won last year. The Barton establishment will be represented in the Elderslie Handicap by Red Tinge, which will be riaden by B. J. Anderton.
