TALKS IN CAIRO

Hammarskjold Visit (Rec. 9 p.m.) CAIRO, March 21. The United Nations SecretaryGeneral, Mr Hammarskjold, will continue today his on the spot analysis of the Israeli-Egyptian and the Suez Canal crises. In a six-hour conference last night with President Nasser, he is believed to have gone thoroughly into all aspects of these two Middle East problems and their effect on the rest of the world. Mr Hammarskjold will see the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Dr. Fawzi, today. Mr Hammarskjold is almost certain to see President Nasser again. In spite of the veil of secrecy around last night’s talks, authoritative foreign diplomatic quarters understood that two fundamentals of Sir Hammarskjold’s approach to the problems under debate were: (1) The Egyptian-Israeli crisis. A solution revolving around the armistice agreement, which provided an existing basis for pacification, if wholeheartedly adopted by both parties. (2) The canal problem: Exploration of the adaptability of Egypt’s terms for operation of the canal expounded in a memorandum last Tuesday, the six points unanimously approved by the Security Council and the possibility of negotiations for a permanent settlement between Egypt and the canal users.
