Peronist Leaders Escape
(Rec. 11 p.m.)
BUENOS AIRES, March 19. The escape of six top Peronistas from their Argentine prison to asylum in Chile has dealt another blow to the prestige of the provisional regime of Mr Pedro Aramburu. Anger swept the capital as word spread that six lieutenants of deposed Juan D. Peron bribed their way out of supposedly escapeproof Rio Gallegos prison, 1200 miles south of Buenos Aires, in bleak Patagonia, and effortlessly crossed the Chilean border 50 miles away.
In a belated show of action, the Government arrested the prison staff for questioning and replaced them with frontier guards. Diehard Peronistas openly derided the Government. AntiPeronistas expressed fear that the dramatic escape might inspire a drive to restore Mr Peron, now in Venezuelan exile. Shaken Government officials said the escapers bribed their way out with the help of the chief of the prison guard.
