RACING Fulgent Wins Easily In Kettle Memorial

(From Our Own Reporter)

GREYMOUTH, March 11. Fulgent, whi,ch had failed in the Greymouth Cup, after receiving a check in the running on the first day of the meeting, atoned for that defeat with a decisive win in the Kettle Memorial Handicap, principal event and first leg of the double, on the concluding day of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at Omoto today. Ridden today by E. G. Low, Mrs C. C. McCarthy’s Red Mars gelding ran the mile in Imin 39sec, anew record for the course. Like his stablemate, Tonka, which won the second leg of the double on Saturday, Fulgent was also greeted with a mixed reception as he returned to scale. After a hard-fought finish with Skyrain, Rising High won the second leg of the double, the Electric Hack Handicap. The Fulgent-Rising High combination returned a double dividend of £33 3s for £l. The weather was fine until the seventh race, after which heavy rain made conditions unpleasant. The track was fast and the attendance fair.

The totalisator on-course handled £13,809 10s, including £1365 10s on the double, compared with £10,999 on the second day last year. The total on-course for the meeting was £27,026 10s, compared with £22,670 10s last year. J. M. Dempsey, the rider of Matahiwi in the Walton Memorial Hack Handicap, was charged before the Judicial Committee under Rule 281 (3) and (88) with offensive behaviour to the starter. He was fined £5. Kettle Memorial Royal Voyage was badly left in the main event, the Kettle Memorial Handicap, and Eastern Star and Merriment showed out from Moilynn, Appreciate, and Eileen Gloss. At the half-mile Appreciate moved up to share the lead with Eastern Star, and these two were followed by Moilynn, Eileen Gloss, Merriment and Fulgent. Fulgent made a fast forward move racing to the straight, nnd although Eileen Gloss challenged strongly in the run in the Red Mars gelding fought back gamely to win by half a length and create a new course record for the mile. Ridden by W. D. Skelton, Moilynn ran more kindly to take third place from Merriment. The first day’s form worked out well in the Trial Stakes, as horses which filled the places on Saturday did so again. The difference in weights, however, favoured the Orari-trained two-year-old Marccette, which was able to turn the tables on Brown Treasure, with Jack’s Folly again having to be content with third place. Marcoette began smartly and led throughout. His nearest attendants along the back and rounding the home bend were Fitter Patter, Brown Treasure, and Jack’s Folly. The leader gave nothing else a chance in the run to the judge, where he had an advantage of two lengths on Brown Treasure, which narrowly beat Jack’s Folly for second. Beau Revere Wins

Form again worked out well in the Walton Memorial Hack Handicap. Beau Revere, which ran third on Saturday over a similar distance, improved to win by two lengths from the favourite. Almay. Beau Revere was the early leader from Red Elm, Almay. Fairy Whispers and Brookfields Lad- Beau Revere was galloping freely two lengths clear of Almay at the three furlong post, and this pair was clear into the straight from Red Elm, Brookfields Lad and Tonka. Beau Revere held his advantage over the concluding stages. Nicosia came from well back to cut Brookfields Lad out of third by a nose in a photo finish. Red Elf in Form Red Elf, which had finished a poor fifth over six furlongs and a half on the opening day, improved to win against the hack milers in the Dominion Hack Handicap. Zami Lyn, Red Elf, Toddler and Ngahuia were first to show out, and they were still the leading bunch at the halfmile. Eastern Star and Ngahuia made up ground rounding the turn and there was little between them as they swung for home, where Red Elf was becoming prominent. Red Elf stayed on best to win comfortably from De Rose, with Tonka and Ngahuia next. Second Leg The Electric Hack Handicap, the second leg of the double, provided an excellent finish, and it was only vigorous horsemanship by W. D. Skelton that gained victory for Rising High. From an even start, Direct Passage, Skyrain, Rising High, Danger and Almay were most prominent at the end of two furlongs. There was little change m the leading positions when the field reached the straight where Direct Passage, Almay, Skyrain, Rising High and Looking Forward were handiest. Rising High had to be hard ridden to shake off the off-course substitute over the finishing stages. Looking Forward held on for third, ahead of the topweight Red Elm, which was giving the leaders nearly 12 lengths with a furlong and a half to run. Jesse James Surprises

Jesse James led throughout the Blaketown Handicap to gain a surprise win and pay a dividend of nearly £3O. Jesse James’s nearest opponents at the half-mile were Merriment, Appreciate, and Moilynn. Jesse James ran on strongly in the straight and did not look like being caught. Beauty Queen gave a fine performance, making up a lot of ground over the latter stages after a slow beginning and beating the rest of the field by almost as much as she was beaten. Merriment battled on for third ahead of Moilynn. Results:— TRIAL STAKES, of £120; five furlongs and a half.—l, 1 MARCOETTE (7) 7-10 M. D. Alexander 1; 3, 3 Brown Treasure (1) 9-6 A. AUSTRALIAN RACING REDCRAZE WINS STAKES MISS HIGH CASTE TAKES CUP (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 11. Redcraze today again proved his superiority over the Victorian champion stayer. Sailor’s Guide, when he won the rich Queen Elizabeth Stakes over one mile and a half at Flemington. Redcraze, which started at 5 to 2 on, defeated Sailor’s Guide (9 to 4) by three-quarters of a length, with Roman Holiday (40 to 1) six lengths further back third. The win brought Redcraze’s stakewinnings to £60,396 (Australian). He has won £42,789 of it in Australia. Redcraze seems certain to become the greatest stake-winning horse in Australia and New Zealand this autumn. $ Only Rising Fast, which won £66,765, is ahead of him on the list of stake-winners in Australia and New Zealand. Actually Shannon heads the list with £84,684 in stakes, but only £18,987 of it was won in Australia. The rest was won in the United States. Today’s race was Redcraze’s last in Melbourne this autumn—he was scratched last week from next Saturday’s Queen’s Cup—and he will now tackle the weight-for-age races in Sydney and perhaps the £12,000 Sydney Cup on Easter Monday. Today his jockey, A. Ward, again rode a perfectly-judged race, knowing that his only danger was Sailor’s Guide. At the turn Roman Holiday led from Oxley. Redcraze was behind them, and Sailor’s Guide moved up fast in an endeavour to box Redcraze in. But Ward sensed that was happening, and pulled his mount out three wide, which forced Sailor’s Guide out. Ward shot Redcraze away to a two-length lead as they straightened up for home, and although Sailor’s Guide threw out a determined challenge he could not bridge the gap and went down by three-quarters of a length. Australian Cup Finish Miss High Caste defeated the hot favourite, Beaupa, in a bustling, rough, hard-hitting finish in the Australian Cup. Miss High Caste, who started at 16 to 1, defeated the 9 to 4 favourite by a head, with Lourdale (25 to 1) a length and a quarter further back. The three place-getters staged one of the most thrilling finishes seen at Flemington for years, and in the last furlong victory could have gone to any one of them. The lightweight Sydney jockey, Noel McQrowdie, who tode the winner, has been successful in more than 50 cup races —the only two he has not won are the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. Riding with grim determination, he flogged his mount across the line to a narrow but convincing win. The New Zealand sprinter, Arganda, jumped away well in the fivefurlong Winslow Handicap, but he did not show speed comparable to the winner, the Queensland horse, Gullungun. ridden by a Sydney jockey, George Moore. Gullungun led all the way, and beat the Sydney sprinter. Lucky Stride, by two and a half lengths, with Arganda third. There was a photo for the second placing. Results were:— QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES, Of £lO,OOO. One mile and a half. REDCRAZE by Red Mars—Myarion 9-3 .. ..A. Ward 1 Sailor’s Guide 9-0. .. R. Heather 2 Roman Holiday 9-0 .. N.
