PALMERSTON NORTH LIBEL ACTION
MOVE FOR NON-SUIT OR NEW TRIAL ( (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NTH., March 11. A motion for a non-suit, or alternatively a new trial, has been filed by the Manawatu Daily Times Company, Ltd., and Douglas Arthur Davies, the printer and publisher, against whom £l5OO damages were awarded in a claim alleging libel, brought by Guthrie Wilson, the author. The case was heard in the Palmerston North Supreme Court on February 21, 22 and 23 before Mr Justice Henry. Mr H. R. C. Wild, of Wellington, appeared for Wilson, and Mr W. S. Shires, also of Wellington, for the defendants. The grounds on which the motion for a non-suit or a new trial is sought are mainly that the Judge misdirected the jury and that the damages were excessive.
