Funds for Arab Refugees
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, March 1. The United Nations General Assembly yesterday approved without opposition and with only Iraq abstaining a five Power resolution authorising the United Nations to disburse funds to Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon for the rehabilitation of Palestine Arabs granted refuge in those countries. •
The resolution gave Mr Henry Labouisse, director of the United Nations Works and Relief Agency, authority to disburse such funds as might be available to the individual “host” governments lor general economic projects. Such disbursement would be subject to agreement by any such government that within a fixed period of time it would assume financial responsibility for an agreed number of refugees. The Arab refugees, who fled from Palestine after the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, are now in Syria, Jordan, the Lebanon and Egypt, which has about 200,000 living in the Gaza Strip.
