ATHLETICS Miss M. Donaghy Sets New High Jump Record

(Neto Zealand Press Association)

DLNEDIN, March 3. a a ‘ anf l records, one an individual efforl by the Olympic Games representative, Miss M. Donaghy, in the high jump and the other a team effort by the Auckland relay combination,' (T. Heeps, G. Dimmock, D. Norris and E. Davidson) were two of many highlights at the New Zealand junior and women s track and field championships which ended at Carisbrook yesterday.

The two Australian Olympic Games representatives, Misses Betty Cuthbert and Erica Willis, thrilled more than 2000 spectators with a brilliant duel in the 75 yard championship. The decision went to Miss Cuthbert, but both were credited with the same time. B.ssec. just o.2sec outside the New Zealand record, which stands to the credit of another Australian, Miss Marjorie Jackson. The long jump, with Miss Willis and the New Zealand Olympic representative. Miss Betty Weigel both in the field, resulted in a victory for Miss Weigel by the narrow margin of three-quarters of an inch. Third Win After winning the 100 yards on Friday evening and the 75 yards. Miss Cuthbert made it three in a row when she led from start to finish in the 220 yards. She did not extend herself over the fin?] 40 yards and won easing up in 24.95ec. Her winning margin was 10 yards over Miss H. Roberts (Waikato), Miss M. Chamberlain (Canterbury), and Miss N. Dellaway (West Coast, North Island), who finished in a close line. Conditions were ideal. The track was in excellent condition, the sun shone brightly and only a slight breeze blew across the track and this in no way hampered the competitors. Auckland's 15-man team was by far the most skilled, and easily retained the H. L. Towers Shield with 60 points. Other points were: Wellington 34. Canterbury 29, West Coast (North Island) 15. Otago 13. Waikato 11, Southland 8, and Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay 1. The Lumley Shield, in the women's section, resulted in a tie between Canterbury and Waikato, each wdth 25 points. Auckland was third with 23 points. Then came Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay and. Wellington, with 11 points each. West Coast (North Island) 4, Southland 0, and Otago 0. The Yvette Williams Trophy for the women’s long jump was won by Miss Weigel (Auckland), and the Victor Hugo Trophy for the women’s relay was won by Wellington. Well-conducted Meeting A visiting South Australian athletic official. Mr J. Kelly, was much impressed by the manner in which the meeting was run. He said the conduct of the meeting compared more than favourably with anything in his country except perhaps the recent Olympic Games. He presented a commemorative trophy to the Otago centre, and this was awarded to Miss S. Weller as the youngest member of the host team. In the women’s 75 yards event, it was considered by many that Miss Willis, on the form she displayed in the 100 yards on Friday night, may have a chance of edging out the mercurial Miss Cuthbert. Except for Miss Jackson (Otago) the field went away to a perfect start. Miss Willis was the first to show cut. Miss Cuthbert, however, running with a pronounced high knee-lift action, drew level with the taller Miss Willis at the 60yard mark and went on to win by the narrowest of margins. The first New Zealander across the line was Miss N. Singer (Wellington) from Miss M. Roberts (Waikato) and the 100 yards title-win-ner, Miss N. Morgan (Auckland). Abbreviations used are:—Auckland (A.), Canterbury (C.). Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay (H.8.-P.8.), Otago (OJ. Southland (S.), Waikato (Wk.), Wellington (W.). West Coast, North Island (W.C.N.1.). Results:—

INTER-CLUB MEETING

FAST TIME FOR 100 YARDS The best junior and women athletes were away at Dunedin and seniors were holding themselves in check for the national titles next week-end when inter-club competitions were held at Rugby Park on Saturday. In spite of that the senior 100 yards time of lO.lsec recorded by L. Jones (T.H.), was the best time done at Rugby Park for the season. It was a close race, in which Jones’s club-mate. P. G. Morrison, challenged strongly throughout. J. K. Macdonald strolled through the senior mile in 4min 20sec. T. Crossen (University), who failed at the provincial championships, showed a return to form when he won a heat of the 440 yards in 50.9 sec. He did not contest the final, which was won by B. Kerr, who beat the titleholder, C. Courtney, in the same time.

The marathon runner, W. Richards (Technical) had his first run —a mile—since he injured his ankle several weeks ago. Although he completed the distance he did so at only a slow pace, as his leg was still painful.
