Man Buried By Rubble
(N.Z. Press Association—Copy right) PERTH, February 22 Mr William John Garner, a 44-year-old labourer, of Beaconsfield, Perth, was sitting among the rocks at the South Mole, Fremantle, yesterday, peacefully eating fish and chips when a tip truck dumped a full load of rocks and sand on top of him. For 14 hours Mr Garner, his leg fractured and suffering from internal injuries, lay under the load. A night-shift mill worker, Ron Johnston, walking along the mole on his way home, saw a singlet waving on the end of a stick poked out from the rocks. Later, from his hospital bed. Garner said: “I was conscious most of the time, and in pain. It was the longest night I have ever spent.”
