Two Western correspondents were expelled today by the Hungarian Government
They are Michael Weigall. of Reuter’s, and Raymond Hoerhager, the correspondent of the “Sued Suddeutsche,” “Deutsche Zeitung,” and other West German newspapers.
Three Western journalists have now been expelled from Hungary in the last week.
The two were summoned by the Foreign Ministry at 3 p.m. and told that they must be out of the country by midnight tonight. Weigall and Hoerhager protested that this was virtually impossible because of the icy state of the roads. The Foreign Ministry agreed to change the deadline to midnight tomorrow. The Ministry gave the reason for their expulsion as participation in the events at Csepel on January 11, where they were said to have shown “an attitude incompatible with the continued exercise of their professional activities in Hungary.” Five workers were killed and a number wounded on January 11 when Hungarian Communist militia fired on workers. The workers were demonstrating for higher wages and against the reinstatement of “Stalinist” officials on the management of the Csepel iron and steel combines in ~outhern Budapest. Mr Jack McCormack, the Vienna correspondent of the “New York Times.” was expelled from Hungary on Tuesday for allegedly falsely reporting the events in Csepel that day.
