I.R.A. BOMB

(Rec. 8 p.m.) BELFAST. Jan. 16. An electrical power transformer was blown up near Londonderry tonight. Police are investigating the explosion, believed to be the work of members of the Irish Republican Army. The transformer was about a mile from the centre of the city. Thousands of homes in several nearby towns and villages were plunged into darkness after the explosion, and military establishments and police stations were also without lights. Searchlights used for anti-I.R.A. defence purposes would not work. There was widespread police activity after the explosion, and a large force was rushed to the scene. One theory is that a home-made bomb caused the explosion.

Road blocks were set up, all traffic was stopped and the drivers of vehicles were questioned.

Fire Nears Town

SYDNEY, January 17

The biggest bush fire in the New South Wales mid-west for 10 years is raging out of control around the little pastoral town of Parkes, 280 miles from Sydney. Last night the fire was 17 miles! away from Parkes and an easterly wind was driving it in towards the town. The fire had driven 35 miles on a 12-mile front over thicklypopulated farmlands since Tuesday afternoon.
