HUNGARIAN REFUGEES

Party Arrives At Auckland

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. Jan. 17.

The strain of sudden flight from their homeland, weeks of anxiety in Austrian refugee camps, and a hot, tiring air journey across the world showed on the faces of 78 Hungarians who arrived at Whenuapai tonight. The refugees were quiet and restrained as they filed into the airport terminal from the aircraft.

The happiest of the group was Mrs Jonas Mayer, whose husband arrived in New Zealand in October. 1950. He had flown to Whenuapai to await his wife’s arrival when previous planes had come in. Each time he had gone home disheartened. Tonight, his telephone call from Wellington came through minutes after the plane arrived. Mr Mayer had to flee from Hungary in 1948, but his wife and children could not get out. On December 5 last his family crossed the border. Mrs Mayer came on ahead to join her husband. Her family will follow later.

With the 82 refugees who arrived by air from Austria last night, the party will leave for the south by special train tomorrow afternoon. Most will go to homes in southern cities.
