THE REFUGEES

Sir ' —Over the air at a women’s session I heard an appeal for cycles for Hungarian refugees who are some distance from their jobs. Seeing they are amazed at the size of their pay envelopes, I feel sure many firms would sell secondhand or new machines on time payment. I came from the heart of London after the first war and well I recall walking home with my first baby. Every morning in rain or shine and winter I had to go to a dairy over a quarter of a mile each way to get a pint of milk. I feel the thing is being overdone in appeals, even to a wedding outfit. Why not a simple ceremony in ordinary dress? Returned men, old pensioners, were never so feted.— Yours, etc., WHAT NEXT. January 16, 1957.
