The recent arrival in New Zealand of Mr Julian Sandys, the 20-year-old grandson of Sir Winston Churchill, and eldest son of the British Minister of Defence. Mr Duncan Sandys. recalls the close family ties of the Sandys family with New Zealand.

During his six weeks’ stay in the Dominion, Mr Julian Sandys will visit the Springfield Estate, near Methven, the farm once owned bv his great-grandfather. Duncan Cameron, and the former home of his grandmother. His father also stayed at the farm when he visited New Zealand in Seotember. 1953.

Yesterday. Mr Sandys lunched with the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) and is at present staying with Mr R. G. Gerard, M.P.. at Mount Hutt.

Duncan Cameron. Mr Sandvs’s great-grandfather, came to New Zealand from Inverness-shire. Scotland, in the Mirage in 1864. He was a member of the Lochiel branch of the Cameron clan.

For five years Mr Cameron managed a sheep farm at Winchmore for Robert Parke, and later with Robert Gould purchased the Springfield Estate. At his death the estate was cut up and the original 28-roomed homestead on the main road from Ashburton to Methven is now owned by Mr A. W. Taylor. On a visit to England. Duncan Cameron’s daughter. Mildred, met Captain George Sandys and they subsequently married in New Zealand. Their son, Duncan, was born in England.

Mr Julian Sandys who, like his father, is an old Etonian, intends to study for a law degree at Melbourne University, instead of going to a British University. His father was at Magdalen College. Oxford. Mr Sandys gives as his
