ANTARCTIC FLIGHT

Air Support For N.Z. Party [Ross Sea Committee Official Correspondent] SCOTT BASE, January 16. The Beaver aircraft, ‘‘City of Auckland.” took off from the bay ice last night on its first Antarctic flight. It is now ready to support the New Zealand expedition by reconnaissance trips in the mountains edging the Polar Plateau. The Beaver was assembled weeks before schedule through long hours of work by the flight engineer sergeant, L. W. Tarr, and other members of the Antarctic flight. The work was made necessary when the wing of the Auster float plane was crushed against another ship as the Endeavour was leaving Lyttelton. Squadron Leader John Claydon. leader of the flight, is completely satisfied with the Beaver. He and Flying Officer W. Cranfield have made several flights into the mountain area inspecting suitable landing strips.
